fast food reviews

Being a pregnant lady, I am allowed to be a complete pig. The other day I really wanted a crispy chicken sandwich. I was appalled when I paid $4.89 + tax (rang up to over $5, faints) for my crispy chicken club sandwich. The sandwich wasn't even that great. It was pretty bland, a bit dry but with really tacky mayo and it was on oblong, yet not very long bread and seemed really small.

Today I got a spicy crispy chicken sandwich from Jack in the Box and it totally kicked McDonald's crispy chicken club's ass. It was $3.89 (I got it with cheese otherwise it's $3.59), round and seemed larger. The chicken was crispy and had flavor and a bit of spice, the lettuce was also crisp and the tomatoes were plump and red, the mayo and bun made for a nice moist sandwich.

The moral of the story is: if you must have fast food Chicken sandwich, skip McDonald's and go to Jack in the Box!

Not to mention Jack in the Box has good shakes...

Food News Flash

I discovered tonight that Jack in the Box milk shakes are decidedly better than Wendy's milkshakes. Additionally, I learned that you should never, ever attempt to ask questions about the food to the drive through employees.

Drive thru: Welcome to Wendy's how may I help you?

Me: Are your shakes made with ice cream?

Drive thru: What?

Me: Are your shakes made with ice cream?

*a minute and a half of silence*

Drive thru (different person): Welcome to Wendy's how may I help you?

Me: Are your shakes made with ice cream?

Drive thru: What?

Me: Ice cream?

Drive thru: *garble garble*

Me: Ice cream?

Drive thru: We only have iced tea.

Me: Ice cream?

Drive thru: Iced tea?

Me: FROSTY?

Drive thru: You want a frosty?

Me: Are the frosties made with ice cream?

Drive thru: What?

Drive thru: No just iced tea.

Me: *sighing* Okay I'll get one large strawberry frosty and one large chocolate frosty.

Drive thru: That'll be $6.91

Is this a scheme to get me to buy their sub-par shakes??

For any of my friends who are also friends of Britt, just wanted to let you know that poor Miles has pneumonia AGAIN! Ugh. So he's being admitting into El Camino Hospital in Mountain View tonight.

On a happier note:

A shitty post: Thoughts on cats & motherhood

Disclaimer: Do not read if you're eating!

I screwed up and muttered "shit." Then it occurred to me that this was funny, because the reason I said it was because I actually had a big piece of shit on my thumb. Then I was grossed out and went to wash it off. Ahh, motherhood.

Yesterday at breakfast the cat hit an all-time low. While I was feeding Derek, the 20-year old cat had a drawn-out pooing session in the corner right behind Derek's high chair. Unfortunately, since this is where its owners allow it to do its business I felt pretty helpless to do anything about it! After several minutes of butt-quivering resulting in - well, I'll save the details for later - the cat waddled out in front of us and as it walked, its rear started pulsating again and it had full-body shivers until it had a diarrhea speckled pee on the floor. Then the cat walked back over behind Derek's chair and did loud wretching gurgling vomiting of mushy brown-yellow stuff three separate times. Sometime between the vomiting and the peeing, the cat also managed to take a big dump behind my chair.

Hurray for Derek sleeping out of my arms today! I must go take care of some things now.

here goes! Most boring post ever. Sorry.

Happy New Year!

I decided I have time to make a post since Derek is taking one of his VERY rare long naps. He'll probably wake up halfway through, of course.

Today my car swam with a school of other cars up El Camino. It was interesting. I tried to back up when I noticed the newly formed lake, but there were too many other cars inching up behind me so I had no choice. Fortunately my car made it through alright.

It's 2:40 but it seems like it's 6 or 7 at night already it's so dark. I am afraid to take the garbage out because I got soaked just running out to get my coffee out of the car this morning! Derek thinks the weather is entertaining, at least. It means we're stuck inside all day, which makes it more difficult to do fun things with Derek.

Gene and I are taking all of our DVDs out of their cases and consolidating them into large binders. Then we're going to store the cases in the basement. Our place is so small that having the entire house lined with shelves of DVDs isn't really working out for us anymore. Oh, I am wondering if any of my friends out there have my copy of Dead Alive or THe Usual Suspects? I think that I loaned them along with some other DVDs to someone a looooong time ago, but I don't remember who. Those are two of my favorites, so I'm hoping to get them back! I really want to create a nice environment for Derek to play and move around in, so we are also trying to get Purrl to move into the upstairs area of the house with Gene's parents so that we can re-claim and clean the room that she lives in.

Other peoples' buns

For some reason this reminded me of Zoidberg's "wah wah wah wah wah" ground rolling. If you know what I mean.

Derek loves the playground

Pregnancy/Birth survey

'Cause Brittany asked me to. And I'm not cutting it, so there!

1. WERE YOU MARRIED AT THE TIME?: Yes.

2. WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS?: Shock and joy.

3. HOW OLD WERE YOU?: 25

4. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT?: Gene and I had been hanging out until late at my parents' house with some friends. Right before we left to go back to Burlingame I went to the bathroom to pee, and when I sat down I opened the little cabinet in front of the toilet I noticed a pregnancy test inside. So I decided to use it, just for the heck of it, because I thought I was going to get my period any day, but it was late.

5. WHO DID YOU TELL FIRST?: Gene was waiting in the room outside the bathroom so that we could go home. I asked him to come look at something. I showed him the stick and I said "Does it look like there's another line?" He agreed that there was, and then he said, "What the f_?!" He was surprised (but we were trying).

6. DID YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE SEX?: Yes. I think it's sort of silly not to.

7. WHAT WAS YOUR DUE DATE?: Based on my period it was March 29, but based on the first ultrasound it was March 24, and that is also more in line with when I believe it would have been based on my cycle.

8.DID YOU DELIVER EARLY OR LATE?: Labor started at around midnight on March 24, but Derek wasn't born until March 26, so according to my calculations he was late. According to the hospital he was 3 days early.

9. DID YOU HAVE MORNING SICKNESS?: Yup, up until at least five months. I threw up many times at my office. I'd usually get sick on the car ride to work every morning and have to hold back the urge to vomit once I arrived at work.

10. WHAT DID YOU CRAVE?: I don't think I craved anything, really. There were things that really grossed me out, though, that normally don't. Up until the very end of the pregnancy I found beef to be incredibly disgusting.

11. WHO IRRITATED YOU THE MOST?: My boss, haha. People at my office.

12. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CHILDS SEX?: Male.

13. HOW MANY POUNDS DID YOU GAIN THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY?: (gasp) 54

14. DID YOU HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS DURING YOUR PREGNANCY?: Yes. We had to have weekly ultrasounds to look at Derek's left lung. Also, after I went into labor they thought I was developing pre-eclampsia because my blood pressure was high.

15. WHERE DID YOU GIVE BIRTH?: Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.

16. HOW MANY HOURS WERE YOU IN LABOR?: I'm not really sure. I was in labor from about midnight on March 24 until Derek was born at 6:34 p.m. on March 26.

17. WHO DROVE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL?: Gene.

18. WHO WATCHED?: Gene, the nurse, the doctor and whatever other random medical personnel were in the room.

19.WAS IT NATURAL OR C-SECTION?: natural

20. DID YOU TAKE MEDS TO GET RID OF THE PAIN?: Yes. My blood pressure was getting worse because of the head-exploding pain of contractions with pitocin, so I got an epidural. It was lovely.

21.HOW MUCH DID YOUR CHILD WEIGH?: 9 lb 11 oz.

22.DID YOUR CHILD HAVE ANY COMPLICATIONS?: He was examined by a neo-natal team at birth and scored well on his apgar. He was breathing perfectly. However, he does still have the thing with his lung.

23.WHAT DID YOU NAME HIM/HER?: Derek Oliver Warren

24. HOW OLD IS YOUR FIRST BORN TODAY?: 5 months 1 week

Sitting up with sick Derek in the bathroom with the hot water running for steam. Every time I tried putting him back down to bed he would fuss again after a couple of minutes. I don't know how much sleep I'll get tonight! Wah. I think this laptop is about to run out of batteries and I can't find the power cord. So soon I will have to find another form of entertainment.

yipee

Gene and I just ordered this camera as our anniversary gift to each other http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665089207. We read a lot of reviews and looked at a lot of other cameras and for the price (we actually got it from a different site at a lower price) this one seems to be most what we are looking for and the best deal. It's just 1 megapixel more than our current camera but is much better quality and has a better lens with 15x optical zoom. Our current camera has decided it's not going to be able to tell whether the batteries have juice or not and is simply going to assume they are empty, and that it will have a 5-10 second delay on all photos, even with the fast memory card. We figure it is important to have a decent camera so that we can take lots of good pictures of the babers!

Here are some photos of Mr. Babers with our crappy camera.

Poor Gene!

It's Gene's THIRTIETH (30!) birthday today and he's completely miserable. He's been up since 2:30a.m. with horrible nausea and is just now finally getting some sleep.

Derek also decided he would get up at 2:00a.m. and didn't really feel like going back to sleep. Then he decided to projectile vomit on the rug for some reason, but afterwards was completely smiling and happy. It seems like it must be related to what's going on with Gene, but Gene thinks that he has food poisoning so I don't really know.

Needless to say we are all pretty miserable running on very little sleep, and we don't get to do anything fun for Gene's birthday! At least Derek seems to be normal and happy today, and hasn't been running a fever or anything, though I'm still really confused by his vomiting. I am currently having a brief break while Joe is watching Derek.

Oh well...Happy Birthday Gene, my wonderful husband! I will try to make it as happy as possible!

Fortunately Gene and I had waited to head down to Redwood City/Palo Alto since we would have taken 101, but we just heard from Brittany and my mom that 101 is closed at Woodside both N and S because a big rig exploded and there are injuries and fatalities so they're landing helicopters on the freeway! Eek!

Tracy and Jason came over the other night and brought us pearl tea from Verde! Then we ewnt to Trader Joe's and got food and came back to our house and ate. Then we played Mario Party 7 and I only marginally beat everyone, instead of anhilating them all. It was fun. It has been a long time since we had people over, so that was nice.

Yay for finding old Peet's gift cards with money on them!

Tom & Jason came over and visited me & Gene & Derek at my parents' the other night, which was cool. For the most part we're in Burlingame but we'd love to have people over - just give us a call if you want to hang out! Also if anyone wants to come bearing food and/or pearl tea that's cool too. Sometimes it can be hard for us to get out!

Flickr

So I just noticed that people have been commenting on photos on my Flickr account. I really only use it to post stuff on livejournal so I don't hang around on Flickr enough to notice these things. Not a TON of comments but probably about 25 comments throughout my pictures from mostly people who I don't think I know (or maybe I do and don't realize it?). Which doesn't creep me out at all...I think it's kind of cool. But weird that I just noticed! I had accidentally left a picture up there with my giant 39 weeks pregnant belly picture and that had 9 comments on it. How funny!

Spent all day today feeding little Mr. Derek and changing his diaper. He is so cute and I am such a sucker for his babily charms.

Tonight my family went to Chevy's and they were so nice to bring food back for me and Gene. Yum! We stayed home while I fed Mr. Derek some more and watched part of Shaun of the Dead.

After dinner Melinda called (I called her right back since the cell phones don't get reception at my parents' house) and then she and Bryan ended up coming over. Brittany and Dora were going to get pearl tea, but then Miles wasn't feeling well so they decided not to. So Melinda and Bryan offered to go to pearl tea and treat us since we're a bunch of invalids! How incredibly nice.

Tomorrow I suspect will be spent feeding little Mr. Derek and changing his diaper. We managed to get a little bit of sleep last night and I took a quick nap today while Derek was asleep. I don't know how tonight's sleep will be...

Pictures of Derek Oliver

I haven't made an official announcement yet, but Gene took care of that! For anyone who doesn't know Derek Oliver was born March 26 weighing 9lb 11oz and 20.5inches long. Personally I think he's the cutest baby ever :)

Here are some pictures:

Gene & Derek

Staring up at daddy

Gazing into daddy's eyes

Sleepy eyed with mommy

Thoughtful baby

Sleepy naked Derek

Sleepy Derek in daddy's lap

Me and Derek at the hospital

That's all for now!
mmmm

We were going to lounge tonight in Burlingame, but Tracy called us and told us there was a BBQ at the Crackerbarrel. So we went to the Crackerbarrel but it takes a while to get there from Burlingame and we were more than an hour late and all the BBQ was gone. Which was sad. But it was okay because we'd already eaten anyway and we got to see our friends.

Everyone was tired because they had been pub crawling for most of the day, so Gene and I didn't stay long and a lot of people left before us, after oggling my giant belly. This was okay because Gene and I had a plan to go get Krispy Kreme tonight! Coming south put us much closer to a Krispy Kreme, so we drove straight from the BBQ to Krispy Kreme and got a dozen donuts and Gene got a Kafe Kreme, a drink that tastes like a butterscotch latte. We wanted to try the new whole wheat donuts so we got 3 whole wheat, 3 glazed, 2 glazed creme filled (my favorite), 1 chocolate glazed, 1 maple glazed (Gene's fave), 1 sugar, and 1 apple cinnamon filled sugar. Then we came to my parents house and I got myself a big glass of milk and proceeded to eat half a glazed, half a whole wheat, a sugar, half a chocolate, and a glazed creme filled donut. Yum!

Tomorrow I plan to eat another glazed and maybe half an apple cinnamon. I'm only going to be pregnant for another week or two, or even less, so I might as well take advantage of it while I can! Today I'm 39 weeks pregnant, so supposedly just one week to go! The babers is due on March 24. I hope he comes soon. I wonder what labor feels like.

Now I'm off to brush my teeth!

Sonic

While I've been cleaning our house and trying to get stuff done, I have been watching a lot of TV. So I've seen several commercials for Sonic drive in where they specialize in awesome drinks. And being pregnant and easily tempted when it comes to food I'm like, "Mmmm, that sounds GOOD!" I tried looking up Sonic on Yahoo Yellow Pages but couldn't find it. Eventually I went to the Sonic site (www.sonicdrivein.com), and I searched first the 10 mile radius, then 25, then 50 miles and no Sonic!! It turns out the closest Sonic to our house is 51.67 miles away. Why, Sonic? Why do you torture me so?

So now I'm thinking...Dairy Queen or Orange Julius...

We had lots of fun with a relaxing day celebrating Tracy's birthday last weekend. Gene, Jason, Tracy and I went to Gamble Gardens to look at all the barren plants waiting to bloom (okay so we were hoping there would be more flowers, but no!). Even though there weren't a lot of flowers (or even leaves) yet, the garden was still serene and the air was crisp and fresh, just the way I like it!

After our brief trip to the gardens, we went back to my parents' house and played Wii for a while. It was entertaining to watch Jason and Tracy play the Rayman minigames and fight over who got control of the Wii-mote.

Then we took them to birthday dinner at Cafe Pro Bono, and it was muy tasty! I got a risotto in some sort of sweet pommegranate/berry/? sauce with duck confit, Gene got their special porcini alfredo fettucini, Jason got the Ahi tuna on risotto cake, and Tracy got the veal scallopine with lemon caper sauce. Instead of getting dessert at the restaurant, we went to get Tracy's favorite kind of cake: Ice cream cake! Tracy picked out a strawberry ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins and we went back to my parents house to eat it.

After completely stuffing ourselves, we played a fun game of Mario Party (I love that game and so does Tracy). I think I beat everyone, but I don't really remember. Either way it was fun.

SO baby news - as some of you may know, at 33 weeks 6 days (a full term pregnancy is 40 weeks) our son was already measuring at a weight of 7lb. We're expecting a large baby! Now I'm 36 weeks along. Only 28 more days!!! And next week is my last week of work (YES!!!) so I should have more time to take care of baby things, and maybe even time to do fun stuff before Mr. Baby arrives!

I'm so happy I get to stop working soon. Everything is so hectic at work recently. My doctor is going to approve pregnancy disability at 36 weeks, so only about 4 weeks to go.

I realized I haven't really posted pictures of my big ol' baby in the belly here. In case any of my friends are wondering what a 7 months pregnant belly looks like, here you go:

Also, when he kicks and moves around I can see it from the outside. It is very strange and cool.

Cleaning, lazing, imagining food, drooling

Oh my goodness, the gooey buh-da pie lady on Food Network is making a meal that so far hasn't involved butter! Sea scallops and red peppers? What is she on a diet? (not that it doesn't look yummy) I would have at least expected her to wrap the scallops in bacon!

So I really wanted to get some cleaning done today. I thoroughly swept all the floors, picked up trash, threw some things in the laundry, put away some things. Now I feel kind of sick and there is a LOT more stuff to do. It seems like the morning sickness might be coming back a bit. I used to sit around being lazy some weekends while Gene was at work, but feel sort of bad about. Now I need to get all this stuff done, but I have to get used to the idea that it's OK to be lazy when you're big and pregnant and feeling ill.

Next line of business: continue watching Food Network and think about what I want for lunch! I would loooove to have a chicken salad sandwich from Little Luca, but pregnant ladies aren't allowed to have refrigerated meats. I should mention that if you like garlic and HUGE portions, Little Luca has the best sandwiches! They put a peperoncini spread and a garlic spread on every sandwich, and half a sandwich would actually be enough to feed a grown man (though if you're really hungry, 2/3 at least would probably be required). Also, for the size and quality of the sandwiches they are cheap! Most of their sandwiches cost about $5.50-$6.50.

Oh and by the way, if anyone ever wants to come to Burlingame and pamper me, bring me food, clean and organize my house, be really lazy and watch movies or play video games with me while I do absolutely nothing extra to entertain you, etc. I will not stop you!
